Madonna and Christ Child with the Holy Innocents

This iconic depiction the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus is also know as a type of the Madonna of Humility because she is seated on the earth (humus). The centerpiece showing the loving embrace of mother and child is flanked in the side panels by the joyful and jubilant adoration of the Holy Innocents who are considered to be the first to participate in the sufferings of Christ and among the first fruits of a redeemed humanity to enjoy the merits of Christ's passion and to reign with him in paradise.

The original copperplate etching is the result of a creative collaboration between James Langley who inscribed the plate and Mariana Langley who inked the plate and pulled the print.
